Why it matters
A sitemap full of redirected, blocked or non-canonical URLs wastes crawl effort and sends mixed signals about what should be indexed. If lastmod or IndexNow notifications claim changes that never happened, search engines learn to distrust them, so real updates are picked up more slowly. That affects both traditional results and the AI features that rely on fresh, accurate index data.
Evidence to review
- Sitemap crawl, content-diff timestamps and notification receipt/error logs.
How to implement
- List intended indexable canonical pages in sitemaps, not redirects, private routes or noindex variants.
- Tie lastmod to substantive changes.
- Send genuine additions, updates and deletions through supported notification mechanisms; deletions need not return 200.
- Do not use Google Indexing API for ineligible general pages.
How UltimateSEO checks this
Automated. A check in the scan sets PASS or FAIL for this control, and reports UNKNOWN or BLOCKED when its input is missing.
The check looks at: sitemap reachable and valid XML, a sample of listed URLs returns 200 and is canonical and indexable, lastmod values are plausible (not all identical, none in the future); IndexNow key presence is reported as information.
States used: PASS, FAIL, UNKNOWN, NOT_APPLICABLE or BLOCKED. UNKNOWN is never shown as a pass. How states work.
